April 2023

April finally saw the rains abate and the beginning of spring.

Buck Gulch Waterfall

In early April, Jon took a hike in the Ignacio Valley Open Space Preserve to Buck Gulch Falls. The spring rains meant that the falls were flowing well.

Coast Guard Helicopter

The Gnoss Field Community Association hosted a Saturday morning breakfast where two pilots and a rescue swimmer from the US Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco. They bought some rescue equipment and a MH-65D Helicopter. It was pretty interesting and cool to check out the helicopter close up -- atrue search and rescue workhorse. In addition to their web page, check out Air Station San Francisco's Facebook Page.

Año Nuevo State Park

In late April, we drove down to Carmel for a Pebble Beach Nike Tennis Camp. On the way we stopped at Año Nuevo State Park, famous for its elephant seals. Turns out that the really big males, which we had seen on a previous visit long ago, are around December-March, so we missed them. We did see lots of females. We will have to return when the big fellas are out.

Hidden Lake

The last week in April was summer-like with 8oo temperatures. Jon took a hike up Mt. Burdell to Hidden Lake. When we moved to the area, Hidden Lake was an actual lake, teeming with frogs in the spring. Over the years it has silted in and with the drought, is frequently dry. This year, with all of the rains, the lake was again wet, more like a swamp. The grass was lush and the wildflowers were out, too.
